Largest Increase In Hispanics, Up 18%, New ASPS Plastic Surgery Statistics Show

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., March 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Tough economic times may have caused a decline in some areas of cosmetic surgery, but procedures among ethnic patients are up. According to statistics released today by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), ethnic cosmetic procedures increased 11 percent in 2008, with more than 3 million performed, while procedures among Caucasians dropped 2 percent. Cosmetic procedures among Hispanics, the largest and fastest growing ethnic group in the U.S., experienced the greatest growth: up 18 percent.

To view the Multimedia News Release, go to: http://www.prnewswire.com/mnr/plasticsurgery/37338/

"We're seeing a rise in Hispanics opting for cosmetic procedures that coincides with the growth we're seeing in the nation's population," said ASPS President John Canady, MD. "Less social stigma, as well as, advances in procedures allow patients to maintain their ethnic look. While the majority of patients continue to be Caucasian, the profile of the typical patient is changing."

Mexican-American Raquel Laurent, 41, recently had an injectable filler and light laser skin resurfacing to refresh her appearance during these tough economic times. "I've always been interested in cosmetic procedures. And, like many people, I'm more willing to invest in something that lasts many months compared to say a vacation. How you look and feel is important, no matter what your ethnicity."

It's no coincidence Laurent opted for the benefits of cosmetic minimally-invasive procedures. In fact, overall, minimally-invasive procedures were up 5 percent in 2008, ASPS statistics show. Minimally-invasive procedures with the largest increases included injectable fillers and facial rejuvenation procedures.

"Laser skin resurfacing and chemical peels can provide tremendous results when done by a board-certified plastic surgeon familiar with ethnic skin," cautions ASPS Member Surgeon Tripti Burt, MD, who performed Laurent's procedures. However, in the wrong hands, these procedures can lead to pigment irregularities and scarring."

Hispanics comprised 10 percent of the 12 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures performed in 2008, with nearly 1.3 million procedures; African Americans made up 8 percent with 910,000 procedures, up 10 percent; and Asians accounted for 7 percent with 866,000 procedures, up 5 percent.

The most commonly requested cosmetic minimally-invasive procedures for all ethnic groups were Botox(R), injectable fillers, and chemical peel.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons is the largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons in the world. Representing more than 6,700 physician members, the Society is recognized as a leading authority and information source on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. ASPS comprises more than 94 percent of all board-certified plastic surgeons in the United States. Founded in 1931, the Society represents physicians certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery or The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Walk in Her Shoes 2008: Domestic Abuse Victim and Author Lisa Lockwood to Speak at Fundraiser for Abused Women

BLOOMINGTON, Ind., April 10 /PRNewswire/ --

Every Step Counts, in association with Clear Channel Radio and St. Louis Community College, is proud to host Walk in Her Shoes 2008, a designer shoe fashion show and fundraiser to celebrate the lives of women who have suffered abuse but have survived to make the positive move from victim to victory.

Lisa Lockwood, noted speaker and author of "Undercover Angel: From Beauty Queen to SWAT Team ... a true story" (published by AuthorHouse -- http://www.authorhouse.com/), will be the keynote speaker for the event. Her inspirational story of survival was recently featured on CNBC's The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch.

"Awareness is the first step to change," Lockwood said. "As a former victim and police officer, I hope to give people insight and inspiration by showing them that domestic abuse is non-discriminatory -- it even happens to women who appear to have it all together."

Lockwood endured childhood poverty and an abusive marriage to become a soldier in Desert Storm, a police officer, an undercover narcotics detective and the first female SWAT team member in the Chicago area. A former beauty pageant contestant, Lockwood had to suppress her obvious femininity to conquer the "Boys Club" of law enforcement, but her beguiling beauty would become her best asset as an undercover narcotics detective. In the gritty world of drug rings, Mafia crime lords and child molesters she rediscovered the power of her femininity and learned to use her disarming sexuality as a professional asset to ensnare criminals.

"Undercover Angel" follows Lockwood's journey, fraught with inner conflict, as she struggles to balance her dangerous profession with a desire to be a complete woman, worthy of genuine love. Her illuminating story of perseverance and unstoppable drive takes her deep into the heart of a violent world and leaves her in a place of happiness, self-confidence and inner peace.

"We hope to encourage thousands of women across the nation who still suffer in silence and have lost their self-respect and self-esteem as a result of domestic and/or sexual assault," said Madeline Gill, founder of Every Step Counts, a non-profit organization providing programs and services designed to increase awareness of domestic violence and sexual assault.

The St. Louis show will be held Aug. 16 at the Mildred E. Bastian Center for the Performing Arts. Details for a second show in Atlanta will be released soon. More information about Walk in Her Shoes 2008 is available at http://www.walkinhershoes.org/.

Lisa Lockwood is available to speak for no fee at national events promoting awareness of domestic violence. For more information, please visit http://www.lisalockwood.com/.

Bayer Advanced makes consumer rose care products that make it easy to grow Rose Parade quality roses in your own backyard.

The theme for the Rose Parade on New Year's Day is Passport to the World's Celebrations. Bayer Advanced and Pasadena-based float builder Phoenix Decorating have created a float that salutes one of the biggest celebrations in the world -- the Rose Parade.

Bayer Advanced is shooting for its eighth consecutive Rose Parade trophy with its new float.

Bayer Advanced to Put a Rose in Space as Part of the Salute to the Rose Parade

As part of the Bayer Advanced salute to the Rose Parade, the brand is putting a rose in space. A rose named after the Tournament of Roses(R) will be on next mission of the NASA space shuttle Atlantis. www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/main/index.html

The rose was grown in the Bayer Advanced-sponsored Wrigley Gardens at the Tournament of Roses Association headquarters in Pasadena. Bayer Advanced products are used to grow all the roses in the Wrigley Gardens.

The Tournament of Roses rose, which was dried in preparation for the shuttle mission, will be one of the personal items taken into space on STS-122 by astronaut Rex Walheim on behalf of his brother Lance Walheim. Lance Walheim is the Bayer Advanced garden expert and selected many of the roses on the Bayer Advanced float.

"We want to make the Rose Parade's Passport to the World's Celebrations an out-of-this-world celebration," says Bayer Advanced Garden Expert Lance Walheim.

Technical problems delayed the December 6, 2007, launch of the shuttle Atlantis. The rose was going to be featured on the 2008 Bayer Advanced float. It will now be featured on the 2009 Bayer Advanced float.
