Mark Twain's Handwritten 'Last Manuscript' at Heritage Auctions, Oct. 16-17

DALLAS, Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Mark Twain's "Last Manuscript," by turns humorous, and personal, anchors Heritage Auctions' Historical Manuscripts Auction, Oct. 16-17. The two single page manuscripts on adjoining sheets were written by Twain for the daughter of his host family in Bermuda, where he spent the last months of his life. It is estimated at $12,000 - $15,000.

The first manuscript, March 6, 1910, is a humorous device created in playful response to his hosts:

"Bay House, March 6/10," It reads. "Received of S.L.C. / Two Dollars and Forty Cents / in return for my promise to believe everything he says hereafter."

Helen Allen has signed her name in full beneath acknowledging the payment received. The payment of $2.40, as comically intended, made it a binding legal agreement.

"The legendary writer was now free to tell his most outlandish stories," said Greg Rohan, President of Heritage Auctions, "and Ms. Allen was now 'legally bound' to believe him."

The second manuscript was written almost certainly between April 8 and 11, 1910, only 10 days before Twain died, and just before he left Bermuda in failing health.

It reads, in full: "For Sale. The proprietor of the hereinbeforementioned Promise desires to part with it on account of ill health and obliged to go away somewheres so as to let it reciprocate, and will take any reasonable amount for it above 2 per cent of its face because experienced parties think it will not keep but a little while in this kind of weather, and is a kind of proppity that don't give a dam for cold storage nohow."

Twain cites his "ill health" as the reason for his forced departure from Bermuda. After suffering a severe heart attack, his doctors inform him that he has to leave Bermuda or he will die there. In his final line he declares that he does not want to die, "a kind of proppity that don't give a dam for cold storage nohow."

Twain likely returned the handwritten "promise" to Helen as a keepsake.

5 minutes with Elyse Taylor

By Damien Woolnough on October 7, 2009 12:10pm

Australian model Elyse Taylor is in Prague but she hit the BlackBerry to talk to us about her Vogue Australia cover

Where you surprised to end up on the cover of Vogue Australia?

Yes of course, it’s a pinnacle point in any models career to get a Vogue cover and it makes it more special because its from Australia!

What was the shoot like?

Amazing, It’s always amazing working with a talented team. Max Doyle is one of my favourite photographers and Rachel Rutt, also with my agency Chic, is a super cool kid to work with. Watch out for her!

How did you get into modelling?

I was scouted by Ursula Hufnagl, owner of Chic Models when I was 14 and have not looked back since.

What do you enjoy about modelling?

I hate to be predictable but everyday is something new and exciting and I am lucky enough to be able to travel which is fab – I am in Prague at the moment shooting. I love the old city. Fingers crossed I will have some time to discover before heading back to New York.

What has been your favourite gig so far?

Of course my Vogue Australia cover!

What has been the weirdest shoot?

Shooting with celebrities and royals can be sometimes be a little tense.

Is modelling something you wish to pursue long term?

I’m happy to keep shooting as long as I am in demand. I am starting a few educational courses early next year which is pretty cool too.

Cook for the Heart with "The Heart-Smart Diabetes Kitchen"

Cook for the Heart with "The Heart-Smart Diabetes Kitchen"

New Cookbook Offers 151 Fresh, Fast, and Flavorful Recipes Made with Canola Oil

CHICAGO, IL (September 23, 2009) /PRNewswire/ — Heart disease is the leading cause of death around the world, so having a heart-smart diet is important to everyone's health. People with diabetes especially need such a diet as they are at greater risk for heart disease and having it occur earlier in life. "The Heart-Smart Diabetes Kitchen: Fresh, Fast, and Flavorful Recipes Made with Canola Oil," a new cookbook from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and CanolaInfo, is here to help.

The cookbook includes 151 recipes by veteran cookbook author and diabetes recipe developer Nancy S. Hughes. Nutritious meets delicious in her recipes without breaking the bank or burning hours in the kitchen.

The ADA recommends that people with diabetes substitute healthy oils such as canola oil for other types of fat when cooking. As a common ingredient throughout the cookbook, canola oil delivers on heart-health. It has the least saturated fat of all common culinary oils and is free of trans fat and cholesterol. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized a qualified health claim for canola oil on its potential to reduce the risk of heart disease.

"Because of their risk of heart disease, people with diabetes should limit saturated fat in their diet, replacing it with poly- and monounsaturated fats," says Certified Diabetes Educator Esther Garcia Schuster, MS, RD. "Canola oil, rich in these desirable fats, is a great base for the recipes in this cookbook. Using these recipes will ease diabetes management and ensure that healthy cooking is a joy."

Canola oil also delivers on versatility in the kitchen as it has a high heat tolerance (468 °F smoke point), neutral taste and light texture. It can be used in just about any culinary application.

"Canola oil wakes up all of the flavors in foods," says Hughes. "Developing recipes for this cookbook was fun and easy because I had no limitations with the oil and I could focus on the natural goodness of whole foods, herbs and seasonings."

This colorful paperback is available now for pre-orders through the ADA and in October in bookstores. To order, call 1-800-232-6733 or go to http://store.diabetes.org. Proceeds from the purchase of this book go to further ADA's mission to improve the lives of people with diabetes. For more information, visit www.heartsmartdiabetes.org.

How Best To Breastfeed Your Baby

London, 7th September /PRNewswire/ — Bounty, the UK's favourite parenting club, today launches a 4 minute 'How to Breastfeed' online video clip to help expectant and new mums take a real life, close up peek at how a baby 'latches on' to the breast when feeding.

Breastfeeding is the healthiest and most natural way to feed a baby, yet research by www.bounty.com has found that mums' intentions to breastfeed before the birth versus the reality when the baby is born are very different: During pregnancy one-in-two mums (49%) said they intended to only breastfeed, but in reality the actual number that solely breastfed dropped by half (to 25%).

Before the birth of their baby, nearly three-quarters (73%) of women admitted to never being close enough in real life to a friend or family member to see how a baby 'latches on' to the breast, yet this is probably the simplest way for mums to learn the technique instead of following diagrams in leaflets, advice in books and mimicking with dolls and teddies in ante-natal classes.

Bounty Parenting Spokesperson, Faye Mingo said; "Whilst there is lots of breastfeeding advice offered to new and expectant mums, some cannot access the information and support they need at exactly the right time. This video clip is not designed to replace health professional support, but simply acts as a useful refresher to help remind new mums of the 'latching on' technique through looking, learning and listening at anytime of day or night.
