US: Judge Sets Bail At $275000 For American Mom Jailed After Trip To Nigeria

US: Judge Sets Bail At $275000 For American Mom Jailed After Trip To Nigeria

A judge Wednesday set bail at $275000 for a mother accused of abandoning her children to go to Nigeria to marry a man she'd never met in Nigeria.

When I read the story, I simply recalled my article Why Do Fools Still Fall in Love?.

Why do fools still fall in love?

She must be a fool for love to have abandoned her 1-year-old baby and five other young children for a useless romantic trip to Nigeria to marry a Nigerian con man she had only met online. Oprah Winfrey would have called her another American “mugu” fooled by another Nigerian Internet scammer to abandon her six children in the US in a foolish quest for love in Nigeria.

Why do fools still fall in love?

5 Things You Did Not Know Your Phone Can Do‏

5 Things you didn't know your phone can do‏

There are a few things that can be done in times of grave emergencies. Your mobile phone can actually be alife saver or an emergency tool for survival.
Checkout the things that you can do with it.

FIRST
Subject: Emergency

The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112.
If you find yourself out of the coverage area of yourmobile network and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly this number, 112, can be dialed even if the keypad is locked. Try it out. (I have entered itin my cell phone number directory)

SECOND
Subject: Have you locked your keys in the car lately?

Does your car have remote keyless entry?
This may come in handy someday.
Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their cell phone from your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at home pressthe unlock button, holding it near their cell phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you.
Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone that has the other "remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk).

Editor's note: It works fine! We tried it out and itunlocked our car over the cell phone.

THIRD
Subject: Hidden Battery Power

Imagine your cell phone battery is very low. To activate, press the keys Star 3370 pound (*3370#).
Your cell phone will restart with this reserve power and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery power. This reserve will get recharged when you charge your cell phone next time.(I have entered the access number in my cell phone number directory.) *3370#

FOURTH
Subject: How to disable a stolen mobile phone

To check your mobile phone's serial number, key in thefollowing digits on your phone: Star pound 06 pound(*#06#). A 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset.
Write the number down and keep it somewhere safe. When your phone get's stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then beable to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless.
You probably won't get your phone back, but at leastyou know that whoever stole it can't use or sell it either. If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile phones. And finally, I have made a note of my phones serial number.

FIFTH
Subject: Information calls (for those of you in the US)

Cell phone companies are charging us $1.00 to $1.75 or more for 411 information calls when they don't haveto. Most of us do not carry a telephone directory around in our pocket or vehicle, which makes this situation even more of a problem.
When you need to use the 411 information option, simply dial (800) FREE 411 , or 800-373-3411 without incuring any charge at all.
Program this into yourcell phone now. I have entered this number, 800-373-3411 , in my cell phone number directory

I Thank God for My Birthday!

Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's.
~ Psalm 103:5

I am a year older today.
I am very glad and grateful to God for all the beautiful and wonderful things He has been doing in my life from birth.
I thank God for my mother, Gladys Eke of blessed memory and I thank God for my father, Sunday Eke of blessed memory.
I thank God for my brothers and sister and others God has brought into my life.

I thank God for making me one in a million.
I thank God for making my future secure.
For God is my life insurance.

I thank God for the Queen of my heart who called me this morning from Abuja in Nigeria, and for loving me like no other woman has ever loved me since I was born.
She is one in a million.

Psalm 103 (King James Version)

1. Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.

2. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:

3. Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;

4. Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;

5. Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's.

6. The LORD executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed.

7. He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel.

8. The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.

9. He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever.

10. He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.

11. For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.

12. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.

13. Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.

14. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.

15. As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth.

16. For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more.

17. But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children;

18. To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them.

19. The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all.

20. Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.

21. Bless ye the LORD, all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure.

22. Bless the LORD, all his works in all places of his dominion: bless the LORD, O my soul.

Getting Engaged is Just the Beginning ... Now What?

Advice from the Experts at Bed Bath & Beyond(R) to Help Make Your Wedding Planning a Breeze

UNION, N.J., Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ --

Are you one of the thousands of couples who got engaged over the holidays? You're about to share your lives with each other, let the experts at Bed Bath & Beyond share their expertise with you.

(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20080128/NYFNSF02 )

"This is the time for you and your soon-to-be to get everything you ever wanted," commented Kristen Schoenfield, Director of Bed Bath & Beyond's Bridal & Gift Registry. "The time to start from scratch; to upgrade, expand and replace. To turn a whole bunch of mismatched mine and yours into a lifetime of ours."

Schoenfield offers the following advice:

Don't Rush it. A lot of couples get overwhelmed, feeling they have to get it all done at once. This is totally normal. When it comes to registering, relax, take your time and have fun. Go back to the store as many times as you need, or update your registry online.

Options are a Good Thing. Your guests will appreciate a variety of products and price points to choose from. So make sure to scan fine china and measuring cups.

Get Free Stuff. Many manufacturers offer great gifts when you include their products on your registry. Ask your bridal consultant about them.

Register Now, Because You Won't Buy it Later. You may think you will ... but you won't. Trust us. Now is the time to splurge and let others get you the stuff you'd never buy yourself. Remember, your family and friends want to buy gifts for you. Let them.

Don't Forget the Luggage. Creating a home is more than just sheets, towels, pots and pans. At Bed Bath & Beyond, you can register for an espresso maker, a wine cellar and even luggage. Then, when someone says, "you two have serious baggage," you can take it as a compliment.

Refresh and Replenish. Don't forget to periodically update your registry by adding more products if you need to, even after the wedding. Be kind to procrastinators.

Once you've set up your bridal registry, take advantage of our Bridal Toolkit(TM), the complimentary wedding planning tools available at http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/, including your own personal wedding website, task manager and timeline, guest list manager, gift tracker and even a seating arranger. This way, all of your information can be stored in one convenient place.

When you register at any Bed Bath & Beyond store or at http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/, you make it easy for your guests to shop nationwide or online. Guests will enjoy complimentary gift packaging and you'll love the hassle-free return and exchange policy. So, congratulations and best wishes on your engagement. Now get registering and let the gift giving begin!

Forever My Love

Forever My Love

I thank God I found you
Only heaven knows how much I love you.

When I look into your beautiful brown eyes
I can see the visions of our love
The greatest joy in life is to find your true love
And the thought of you fills my heart with joy.
Words are not enough to tell you how much I love you.
Because, what I feel is more than words can say
It is so extraordinary
The symphony of such an awesome love
The crescendo of my heartbeat echoes in my ears
I am so happy to be in love with you.

You are forever my love
Forever my dearest
Forever my sweetest
You are forever my love.

You are forever my love
Because, my love will never end
I will cherish you my sweetest
You are the one I want to kiss when I wake up in the morning
And the one I want to kiss before I fall asleep in the night.
I always want to be by your side
To do my best to make you happy
I do not want you to worry
Because, I will always be here for you
As long as you will believe in our love
I will love you forever.

You are forever my love
Forever my dearest
Forever my sweetest
You are forever my love.

~ By Orikinla Osinachi

Lock Lips, Not Braces This Valentine's Day

Lock Lips, Not Braces This Valentine's Day

From kissing to metal detectors: orthodontists dispel myths about braces and orthodontic treatment

ST LOUIS, Jan. 23 /PRNewswire/ --

Just in time for Valentine's Day, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) sets the record straight on some of the biggest myths surrounding braces and orthodontic treatment. Currently more than four million children and one million adults in North America wear braces. Below are the answers to some of the most popular -- and strange -- questions AAO members have received from their patients during the past year:

If two people with braces kiss, can their braces become locked together?
With today's smaller sleeker braces it is extremely difficult - almost
impossible -- to lock braces while kissing. Also, braces are not
magnetic, which means any "attraction" felt is on the part of the wearers,
so pucker up!

Will my braces set off the metal detectors in the airport?
You are cleared for takeoff - the lightweight materials used in braces
will not affect metal detectors.

Can braces rust?
No. Today's braces are made of new stronger materials, like titanium
alloy, and will not rust.

Once braces are removed, my teeth will remain straight forever, right?
Wrong. Teeth move throughout one's lifetime, therefore it is important to
hold on to retainers and wear them as prescribed by your orthodontist to
maintain a healthy, beautiful smile.

Will my braces interfere with radio signals or electronic devices?
No. Radio-loving gadget fanatics can rest easy.

Am I too old for braces?
Absolutely not. Healthy teeth can be moved at almost any age. Currently
one in five orthodontic patients is an adult. As people live longer and
healthier lives, patients in their 60s, 70s and 80s are experiencing the
benefits of orthodontic treatment.

Can I play a musical instrument?
Yes, that is if you could play a musical instrument before you got braces.

Now that I have braces, can I still play sports?
Yes, but be sure to wear a mouth guard. Mouth guards are one of the least
expensive pieces of protective equipment available. Not only can mouth
guards save teeth, they may also protect against jaw fractures. Mouth
guards are advisable for anyone, whether they wear braces or not.

Will braces increase my chance of being struck by lightening?

Will my braces attract unwarranted attention from fish?
Scuba aficionados take heart: there is no need to cancel your next dive.
The small brackets used in today's braces, especially ceramic or
tooth-colored brackets, will not attract attention from unsavory fish or
sea life.

NEWSWEEK: Newsweek's Annual Oscar Roundtable Brings Together Biggest Names of 2007: Clooney, Day-Lewis, Jolie, McAvoy

On Prospect of no Oscars: "Nobody is going to cross the picket line," Clooney says.

"We're all going to George's house," says Angelina Jolie.

NEW YORK, Jan. 20 /PRNewswire/ --

If the Oscars come around and there's still no resolution to the writer's strike, "The world will end. It's fact. It's official. I was told so. [laughter]," James McAvoy tells Newsweek at the 11th annual Oscar Roundtable. "Nobody is going to cross a picket line. Nobody would even consider it. Would you want to be the only person at the awards?" George Clooney -- the class clown-says. "We're all going to George's house," Angelina Jolie adds. McAvoy, Clooney, Jolie, plus Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard and Ellen Page participated in Newsweek's annual event, moderated by Senior Editor and Movie Critic David Ansen and Senior Editor Devin Gordon.

(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20080120/NYSU003 )

Highlights include:

Clooney on getting involved in political campaigns:

"You know, Michael Moore -- and I like Michael a lot -- but that speech he gave at the Oscars was polarizing. It became Hollywood versus the heartland, and I always find that it's best not to raise the rhetoric at that point. I've been a big supporter of Barack Obama since his Senate run and I'm a friend of his, but I said to him, "I stay completely out of it." I don't show up at those things. And believe me, it's not because his group doesn't say, "Come on, help us out." It's just not the attention you want. I worry about that a lot, because you don't want to do harm."

Jolie on capturing the essence of Mariane Pearl and the symbolism of working with a diverse cast in "A Mighty Heart":

"She never came on the set. She was going to come the first day, and she walked in on me in a costume fitting for her wedding dress. I think she just realized in that moment that she could not see any of it. She said it looked absolutely exact, and then we had dinner, and then she said she was going to leave the next morning." On the cast diversity and political aspect of the film, Jolie told Newsweek, "Just having all those actors at the table was a nice balance, because during this time when our country is at war and there's so much happening, to be in India and Pakistan with Indian and Pakistani actors, who usually also don't work together and don't cross each other's border, to have them asking us questions about politics, to actually have open discussions about 9/11, about Muslim culture, American culture, sharing food, sharing ideas, writing each other's kids' names down -- that did something for us. It was really exciting to say, "God, that Pakistani actor or that Indian actor is one of the best actors I've ever worked with," and I don't often think of actors beyond, you know, the list we're all used to. I think that is very symbolic of what the piece represented."

Day-Lewis on acting with his 10 year-old co-star in "There Will Be Blood":

"He was just a great companion. He was my partner. I miss him a lot, actually. His mom was a state trooper, and his dad was a cowboy. They didn't know anything about the movies. There was a moment, which could have gone awry at the very beginning, when his mom quite rightly thought, "What kinds of people are going to be involved with my son?" She wanted to see what I was going to be like, because she knew he would be spending a lot of time with me. So she rented a copy of "Gangs of New York." [Laughter] And there was a flurry of phone calls. And the studio dispatched a copy of "The Age of Innocence" very quickly."

Cotillard on what she did to pass the time while getting makeup done:

"I slept all the time. We had almost 30 days of heavy makeup. I wanted to kill everybody, and especially everybody wanted to kill me. So they put me in a bed, and they did the makeup while I was sleeping. It was very funny because there's a guy who came to shoot video of me almost every day getting this done. And I saw the video, and they were doing things to me and I can't believe I didn't wake up. It was acrylic painting and latex and prosthetics, so there's glue and all that. Sometimes I had nightmares, and I would wake up with a big scream and cry. One day I was crying while I was sleeping, so the makeup artist's assistant had to spend four hours with tissues around my eyes, so the salt from my tears didn't spoil the makeup."

McAvoy on his experience with the paparazzi:

"I've only ever had anybody waiting outside my house once. We got in our car and we were followed, and it was very weird and disconcerting. We thought we would just go about our daily life and just ignore it, all that kind of thing. I think because we had once read that Clive Owen said just ignore it. Like, do whatever Clive Owen does -- he's a solid guy. We were going into town to buy something for the house, and we went into a parking lot that costs 10 pounds Sterling an hour, and on seeing the price of the parking, the paparazzi went, "F--- that." They left us alone. So the lesson is, if you're being chased by paparazzi, don't drive fast. Just find a really expensive parking lot, and you will be fine."

Clooney adds, "I just found out about 10 days ago that I must live 300 or 400 yards from Britney Spears. I found out because I came home at 10 at night and there's all these helicopters over my house with these spotlights on ... I thought someone had broken out of prison. Like something out of "Die Hard." I get my baseball bat, which is what you always do in every film ... and I called up my assistant, who I thought was in the guesthouse, and I said, "Are you OK?" And she said, "Yes." ... And I go out and I'm running around with a baseball bat in my robe. And it turns out it's paparazzi over at Britney Spears's house. So now I have to move. [Laughter]

Page on the movie that was the impetus for choosing to be an actor:

"It wasn't until I was about 15, when I shot a film with this Canadian actress named Molly Parker, who I just absolutely adored and looked up to, and became inspired by. For the first time, I felt something different. I felt myself being overcome by something I can't necessarily explain. But I wanted to keep feeling that and finding out what that was and learning more about it."

Whisper "I Love You" Day

Whisper "I Love You" Day [Jan 19]

I left Aaliyah and headed out to Brooklyn Heights where everyone was meeting up for dinner at Le Petit Marche. Adrian hadn't been there before and I really wanted him to try the lamb! There was Kate, Adrian, Megan and me. It was one of our weekly "catch up meets". And of course, Kate had a big announcement.

Kate and Jeffrey have benn going out for a week or two now and they're totally in love. They knew it but hadn't said it to each other. You know how it is of the big pressure with saying those three little words! Between Christmas and New Year, they were still getting used to just being with each other. Anyway, the surprising thing is, it wasn't our Kate who said it first!Jeffrey, being the romantic maestro whispered, "I love you" into her ear as she was leaving the subway to come to the restaurant. "Then the doors closed on me. I didn't even have the time to react!

He was smiling when the train moved and then he was out of sight." Kate explained.

"That is so romantic," said Megan, teary eyed.Frankly, I wasn't ready for all this mushy stuff, so I just said, "Why wasn't he man enough to wait for your reaction?" And of course the women were appalled at my comment.

"Maybe he didn't want a reaction. Maybe it was his way of saying, 'No matter how you feel, I'll still love you' kind of a thing. Ya know?"

Megan continued. Adrian all of a sudden said, "Ya! Maybe he wasn't ready for a reaction." Oh great, even my best buddy's against me! I can't help being cynical. I've been through a lot and this mushy stuff was hard to hear. I decided not to dwell on the matter and I think the others sensed my unease too. Megan took up the subject of steak fries and how fantastic the Coq Au Vin, is. Thank goodness for Megan, I was totally saved from the mushy "I love you" stuff.

Clinton and Obama Battle for Votes at BlueBeat.com

America Is Listening!

SANTA CRUZ, Calif., Jan. 17 /PRNewswire/ --

Popular online music streaming site http://www.bluebeat.com/ is hosting the race between the Clinton and Obama musical performances, Hillary's Choice Cuts and Barack Around The Clock, in a competition that will continue through the national primaries. As of mid-January, Barack's stream was ranked at #7, just ahead of Hillary's at #9. The ranking of the performances is based on the number of listeners tuning-in to each station.

(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20080117/AQTH145)

Hillary's Choice Cuts contains songs that she told the New York Post were some of her favorites, including the Beatles "Hey Jude", Aretha Franklin's "Respect", the Eagles "Take It To The Limit", and U2's "Beautiful Day". "I've got everything -- a total smorgasbord," Senator Clinton said, "I'm a child of the '60s and '70s."

Barack Around The Clock contains music that embodies his cool jazz, Motown roots. "I'm old school, so generally, I'm more of a jazz guy, a Miles Davis, a John Coltrane guy, more of a Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder kind of guy," Obama told New York City radio station Hot 97, "But having said that, I'm current enough that I've got a little bit of Jay-Z, and a little Beyonce."

CEO of BlueBeat.com, Hank Risan, comments: "Of the leading Democratic hopefuls, we can better relate to them not only as politicians, but personally through their expressed musical tastes. Hillary and Barack have chosen songs from artists that helped shape and change American culture. It's good to know that our candidates are still listening."

BlueBeat.com offers listeners the opportunity to create their own music playlists for webcasting, called "Be The DJ." These performances are made available for anyone in the world to enjoy through http://www.bluebeat.com/.

Martin Luther King, Jr: Love Is Life

"Hatred paralyzes life; love releases it. Hatred confuses life; love harmonizes it. Hatred darkens life; love illuminates it."

~ Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
Fighting for your rights and standing up for them is what America is all about. I can't find a more patriotic cause than that. So I was really excited when I met Frederick Gray in my usual bar. He was talking to Pete - our regular bartender. He was so enthusiastic that I just had to introduce myself. He's a seven foot tall big guy with really long dreads. He's named after the abolitionist and reformer Frederick Douglass. He was passing out postcards for a Black History Month poetry slam down at the Lower East Side poets’ cafe. We bought each other drinks and we talked about his experiences in the Civil Rights Movement. We talked about Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X and the Black Panthers.

It was really a great discussion of how people can change the course of history together. For me it was uplifting, I mean here I was so concerned about my breakup and being so self-centered. Then a guy like Fred walks into my life and changes my whole outlook. It only happens in New York, I tell ya!

This week's Zen quote comes from Martin Luther King, Jr. he said, "Hatred paralyzes life; love releases it. Hatred confuses life; love harmonizes it. Hatred darkens life; love illuminates it." Spread the love brother, ya know what I'm saying? I've decided to not hate or be bitter about stuff. I think no matter what the future holds, I’m going to have a positive outlook on things. I'll let you know how I'm doing next week!

Hafsat Abiola To Shine in 7 "Vital Voices" World Premiere on January 21 in New York

16 Jan 2008 22:12 Africa/Lagos

Seven 'Vital Voices' are the Subject of Jan. 21 New York Premiere

NEW YORK, Jan. 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --

Seven, a documentary theatre piece based on the real-life stories of seven extraordinary women who are part of Vital Voices Global Partnership, will make its staged debut at the 92nd Street Y on Monday, January 21, at 8pm.

The production, featuring seven individual monologues told by seven actresses, is a collaboration between Vital Voices and seven award-winning playwrights, including Anna Deavere Smith, and is directed by OBIE winning director Evan Yionoulis. The other playwrights are Paula Cizmar, Catherine Filloux, Gail Kriegel, Carol K. Mack, Ruth Margraff, and Susan Yankowitz. The actresses include Linda Emond, Danai Gurira, Mercedes Herrero, Christine Toy Johnson, Mahira Kakkar, Joan MacIntosh, and Heather Raffo.

The lives of these diverse and courageous women illuminate the work of Vital Voices Global Partnership, an international women's nonprofit in Washington, DC, that identifies, trains, and connects emerging women leaders around the world. Seven is part of Vital Voices' year-long celebration of its first decade of serving woman around the world. "Vital Voices is proud to be collaborating with such distinguished playwrights on this groundbreaking work of documentary theatre," said Melanne Verveer, Chair and Co-Founder of Vital Voices Global Partnership. "The lives of these women provide a portal through which audiences will be able to experience a diversity of cultures while bearing witness to the varied ways in which individual women have overcome seemingly insurmountable hurdles to justice and freedom. We hope the Seven stories will inspire audiences to commit themselves to changing our world for the better."

The playwrights interviewed the women and created a script that resounds with the women's own, individual voices from around the globe, including those of:

Hafsat Abiola, Nigeria, an advocate for human rights and democracy following the murder of her activist parents, founded the Kudirat Initiative for Democracy, which provides skills-training and leadership opportunities for young women across Nigeria. She now helps build bridges between African and Chinese women, as China increases its engagement in the African continent.

Farida Azizi, Afghanistan, became an activist fighting the marginalization of women under Taliban rule in her native country. Because of threats on her life, she has gained asylum and now lives in the United States with her two children and works on women's rights and peace-building in Afghanistan.

Annabella De Leon, Guatemala, raised herself and her family out of poverty by getting an education. She has been a Congresswoman since 1995 and has received death threats because of her fight against corruption and for the rights of the poor, particularly women and indigenous peoples.

Marina Pisklakova-Parker, Russia: Against tremendous odds in 1993, she founded the first hotline for victims of domestic violence, which has since grown into Center ANNA, part of a coalition that has provided crisis and counseling services for 100,000 Russian women.

Mukhtar Mai, Pakistan: Gang raped by four men and forced to walk home almost naked in retribution for an alleged "honor crime," Ms. Mai and her harrowing story grabbed headlines across the world. Instead of taking the traditional "women's" route of committing suicide, she brought her rapists to justice, built schools to improve the condition of women, and became an advocate for education in her country.

Inez McCormack, Northern Ireland, is an activist for women's and human rights, labor, and social justice and a former President of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions. She now chairs a program, the Participation and Practice of Rights Project, that helps the disadvantaged access resources and services in Ireland, both North and South.

Mu Sochua, Cambodia: The former Minister of Women's Affairs in Cambodia (one of only two women in the cabinet), she was co-nominated in 2005 for the Nobel Peace Prize for her work against sex trafficking of women in Cambodia and neighboring Thailand.

Vital Voices Global Partnership (http://www.vitalvoices.org/) envisions a world of peace, justice, and economic opportunity for all, where the voice of every woman is heard and respected. Based in Washington, DC, the nonprofit, nongovernmental organization (NGO) invests in emerging women leaders and builds the capabilities, connections, and credibility they need to unlock their potential as catalysts of global progress. Through leadership development and local empowerment programs around the world, Vital Voices works to expand women's role in generating economic opportunities, increasing political participation, and protecting human rights. The Vital Voices Global Leadership network of 5,000 women in 85 countries represents the vital voices of our time. 'I'm a Happier Person Than I Was Before': Actress Elizabeth Perkins of Showtime's 'Weeds' Shares Her Story of Diagnosis, Treatment, and Coping With Type 1 Diabetes in Hollywood

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Jan. 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --

Actress Elizabeth Perkins has come a long way in the few years since she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 44. "I'm actually a happier person than I was before I was diagnosed," she tells the American Diabetes Association's (ADA) consumer magazine, Diabetes Forecast, in the February 2008 issue. In this exclusive interview Perkins discusses her diagnosis, treatment regimen, and the ways in which having diabetes has made an impact on her Hollywood career.

Perkins, who has received multiple award nominations for her role in the critically acclaimed Showtime series Weeds, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2005 while filming the first season of the show. "I felt completely overwhelmed that first year on the show, and I didn't tell anybody I had diabetes. All of a sudden I was in my trailer at work, testing my glucose, and shooting myself up, and I was really scared and felt very alone and completely in over my head...it took me a good year and a half to embrace this and say, proudly, 'I'm diabetic and I'm in control of my disease.'" Type 1 diabetes commonly develops in children, but can occur at any age.

Although Perkins was already familiar with healthy dieting and regular exercise to stay fit for the cameras, having diabetes allowed Perkins to make another important change in her lifestyle. "I really learned to listen to my body and to know what I needed. And there are times I need to rest, and before I never allowed myself to do that."

The experience of coping with the illness has helped Perkins to develop her Weeds character, Celia Hodes. "I was testing my blood, learning how to draw syringes, and injecting myself, unbeknownst to everybody around me...I think that definitely translated into my character: I was just sort of out on a limb, on my own, and there was not going to be anybody to save me except myself." And now? "I'm actually a happier person than I was before I was diagnosed. I have a much greater perspective on the world around me."

Also in this issue:

More American women than men -- twenty-nine percent -- die of heart disease. Recent research has revealed that heart disease differs in crucial ways between men and women, including the symptoms of and age at which a heart attack occurs and the sudden increase in risk of heart disease during and after menopause, as compared to a gradual increase in risk for men as they age. This information, along with articles that share tips about protecting your heart and keeping your feet healthy, are in a special section of Diabetes Forecast in recognition of American Heart Month.

"What I realized is that the reason I do this, why I get up every day, why I believe in our country and the importance of leadership, was not getting across the way that I wanted it to," Clinton tells Newsweek.

Editor Jon Meacham on Hillary, Race and Gender

NEW YORK, Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ --

In the January 21 issue, "'I found my own voice.'" (on newsstands Monday, January 14) Newsweek Editor Jon Meacham examines Hillary Clinton's dramatic comeback win in New Hampshire and whether the battle for the Democratic nomination is one that will be determined by the historically complicated issues of race and gender.

To say it is late in the game for a major politician to have found one's voice is too glib, Meacham writes. Many public figures are works in progress, and they are all certainly human. Clinton's primary victory is a new chance for voters to get to know her beyond the caricatures, positive and negative, that have so long defined her. "Everyone forgets she went to law school when women were not 50 percent of each law-school class, and certainly not seen as litigators," says Maria Echaveste, a senior adviser to Clinton's campaign. "When you were breaking down walls, it wasn't enough to be equally tough. You had to build a shell to protect yourself. That's what she did."

That shell cracked a bit in New Hampshire, Meacham writes, and Clinton now believes it has to stay cracked. "What I realized is that the reason I do this, why I get up every day, why I believe in our country and the importance of leadership, was not getting across the way that I wanted it to," Clinton told Newsweek about Iowa.

She continued, "I get so focused on what I want to do as president that I get a little wonky. I get a little out there, with details, with five-point plans for this and 10-point plans for that, and I think that what I'm proposing really is both achievable and important, but it's not what gets me up, so why should it get voters excited?" she says. "But in the presidential campaign I think I sort of pocketed too much of that. I thought, well, I've been in the public eye for so long now ... I don't think that was a smart assumption for me to make, or for my campaign to make, very honestly."

This is not the year for making any assumptions. Meacham reports that many Democrats have been waiting a lifetime for a viable female presidential candidate or a viable black one -- and now they have one of each, and in the aftermath of Iowa and New Hampshire, the two camps are fighting over a great deal more than just endorsements. "I understand that," Clinton tells Meacham in an interview last Friday. "What a good problem to have. Two leading candidates for president, a woman and an African-American ... I wish it didn't have to be a choice. I think a lot of people who are torn between us feel that way," she says.

"Torn is a tough word," Meacham writes. "But it aptly captures how many Americans, and not just Democrats, already feel about 2008 ... And these are early days: we are only just beginning to grapple with the questions of race and gender that the campaign will raise again and again through November." The campaign now moving out of the largely white states of Iowa and New Hampshire to the rest of the country will soon mean that the politically engaged across America will be presented with the likelihood that a woman or an African- American will be the Democratic nominee and perhaps the president. And, as Clinton says, it's a good "problem" for America to have, he reports.

"But this is a contest," Clinton says, "and the contrasts have to be drawn and the questions have to be asked because, obviously, I wouldn't be in this race and working as hard as I am unless I thought I am uniquely qualified at this moment in our history to be the president we need starting in 2009. And I think it is informed by my deep experience over the last 35 years, my firsthand knowledge of what goes on inside a White House."

Also in the interview, Clinton discussed issues that ranged from her childhood in suburban Park Ridge, Ill., to John Wesley, Reinhold Niebuhr, Martin Luther King Jr. and, of course, Barack Obama. When asked if Senator Obama is right enough or experienced enough to be vice president, Clinton tells Meacham, "Well, I'm going to stay focused on where I am right now. I'm an admirer of his; I campaigned for him; I raised money for him... I am a very big admirer of his, and I think the sky is the limit for him -- in the future. [Laughs.]"

Also in the cover package:
-- Senior White House Correspondent Richard Wolffe and Chicago
Correspondent Karen Springen report on the reality of Barack Obama's
central claim as a candidate -- that he is a change agent, a lifelong
reformer who will heal Washington by bringing together feuding
politicians of both parties -- examining his voting record in the U.S.
Senate and in the Illinois Senate.

-- Senior Editor and Columnist Daniel Gross reports that America's
faltering economy may be the deciding factor in the 2008 election.
-- Investigative Correspondents Michael Isikoff, Mark Hosenball and
Editor-at-Large Evan Thomas report that 2008 promises to be a banner
year for gutter politics, and technology serves as a force multiplier
for crude partisan passion. A Newsweek investigation suggests that
political hit jobs are already rampant and likely to get worse.
-- White House Correspondent Holly Bailey talks with John McCain on the
campaign trail, two days after his New Hampshire primary win, about how
he found his footing, the war in Iraq -- and his lucky nickel.

-- Senior Editor and Columnist Jonathan Alter profiles the chief
strategists for the Clinton and Obama campaigns. "Hillary's man Penn is
a pollster by profession and the quintessential Beltway guy. Obama's
'Axe,' is a hardheaded reformer," Alter writes. "Penn's weapon is his
brain; Axelrod's is his gut."

-- Senior Political Correspondent Howard Fineman writes that, "Rudy
Giuliani sees Florida as his Cape Canaveral: the launching pad for his
better-later-than-never campaign ... Of the three groups that compose
the modern GOP ... Rudy has yet to find a home in one."

Spare a Thought and Stay Alive

Since the weekend, I have been saddened by the bad news of a US Marine, Maria Lauterbach who was raped and when she reported the crime, the suspect was not arrested. He later murdered her, burnt her and buried her in a shallow grave. He fled before her corpse was found. Then, did you know of the lunatic Egyptian Muslim cab driver who murdered his two teenage daughters, Sarah and Amina Said on New Year’s Eve, because they were dating non-Muslims in Texas, US?

Honor Killings are common in Islamic countries, but for a Muslim immigrant to commit such a heinous crime in a civilized nation such as the United States, he must be a raving lunatic. This Fifty-year-old Yaser Abdel Said must be found and brought to justice.

The world would be a better and safer place without these lunatic fringe elements in our midst.

From the Bottom of My Heart

Dear Orikinla,

You and I surprised a lot of people tonight!

In the days after Iowa, I turned to you and asked you to stand with me. When I needed you most, you came through with flying colors.

From the bottom of my heart, I thank you.

All the best,

Hillary Clinton

God Bless New Hampshire for Voting for Hillary Clinton

We thank the Almighty God who gave us victory in New Hampshire.

After Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton lost to Senator Barack Obama in the Iowa Caucuses, the legions of the anti-Clinton cult increased and swarmed the American mainstream news media to frustrate her and accelerate the momentum of the over-hyped Barack Obama into New Hampshire, to defeat Hillary Clinton again. But, I did not give up my support for her good cause. I continued my campaign for her victory on my blogs and websites and other sites.

I am learning many lessons of life from American politics. The lessons I know would be of immense benefit to my country, Nigeria, and me.

Before the polls, I went down on my knees to ask God for divine intervention to give her daughter Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton victory over her enemies and God answered my prayer. I did not wait for the results last night before going to bed. I woke up this morning and prayed as usual in my early morning devotion to God. After my prayers, I went to the main house to greet my younger sister Stella and her children and she greeted me with the good news that Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton has won the New Hampshire primary of the Democratic Party. The news was on Sky News and on the CNN. I was elated as I jumped up praising and thanking God for giving us this victory. I went down on my knees and lifted up my hands to thank God with tears of joy in my eyes.

To God be all the glory for our victory!
HillRaisers are jubilating all over America and the rest of the world.

I love you New Hampshire!
I thank you for voting for Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.
I thank you for giving her the great lift to get her grove back!
I thank you for not losing faith in our hope for the restoration of the American Dream and for the great leadership of America in the world.
God bless New Hampshire!

God bless America!

N.B:
Do not give up your hope, no matter the negative forces or voices of opposition against you, because as long as you are still breathing, and looking ahead, you will make it.
Keep on doing your best for the common good of humanity and you will succeed.
Trust God always, because God answers prayers.

Join Us Today.
